In 1982, Inc. introduced the Inc. 500 list of the fastest-growing privately held companies in the United States. This prestigious list represents the nation’s most successful private companies and has become the hallmark of entrepreneurial success and the place where future big names first make their mark. In 2007, the Inc. 500 list expanded to the Inc. 5000, giving readers a deeper, richer understanding of the entrepreneurial landscape and capturing a broader spectrum of success. Pandora, 7 Eleven, Zipcar, Zappos.com, and numerous other well-known brands have been honored by the Inc. 5000.

Today, the list is a distinguished editorial award, a celebration of innovation, a network of entrepreneurial leaders, and an effective public relations showcase.

The Inc. 5000 ranks companies by overall revenue growth over a three-year period. All 5,000 honoree companies are individually profiled on Inc.com. Inc. also ranks the fastest-growing companies by industry, metro area, revenue, and the number of employees, and they also highlight women and minority-run companies.

Companies on the 2021 Inc. 5000 are ranked according to percentage revenue growth from 2017 to 2020. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2017. They must be U.S.-based, privately held, for-profit, and independent--not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies--as of December 31, 2020. (Since then, some on the list may have gone public or been acquired.) The minimum revenue required for 2017 is $100,000; the minimum for 2020 is $2 million. As always, Inc. reserves the right to decline applicants for subjective reasons.
